Our faculty was found in 1962, known as Department of Home Economics, Nguyen Truong To College of Technical Education, which affiliated with Phu Tho University of Technology, Republic of Vietnam. In 1974, the college was upgraded into Thu Duc University of Education. After the Reunification Day of Vietnam, it was again renamed into Thu Duc University of Technical Education on October 27, 1976. In 1984, it was merged with Thu Duc Vocational School of Industry in order to establish Ho Chi Minh University of Education and Technology (HCMUTE).
On September 4, 1985, the Minister of University agreed with upgrading the department of into the faculty to meet the demand of society at that time. Here is the first faculty having the undergraduate program of Home Economics in Vietnam. There were 6 lecturers, who have been trained abroad as well as inland before.
Due to the basic requirement of qualified engineers in apparel production industry, the bachelor program of garment technology was opened in 1992 and it was also unique program in Vietnam. After that, the apparel industry was strongly extended across the developing countries like Vietnam. Besides assembling the garments, the clothing creators were also required to compete against other countries in the world. The bachelor program of fashion design was thus opened in 2001.
Also, the faculty focused on wearing and eating of people - two of most essential demands. The bachelors in home economics need to be eligible to work in the food processing companies, supermarkets and hotels. Accordingly, the bachelor program in food processing was opened in 2004.
The “Faculty of Home Economics” is not appropriate with its training programs. It was therefore renamed Faculty of Garment Technology and Food Processing. Simultaneously, the strong development at HCMUTE led to the separation as well as incorporation of the faculties. Department of Food Processing Technology combined with Department of Chemistry of Faculty of Foundation Science to become the Faculty of Chemical and Food processing Technology. Finally, Faculty of Garment Technology and Fashion (FGTF) formed with three training programs including Garment Technology, Fashion Design and Home Economics.
Currently, the faculty totally has 29 lecturers and staffs with 4 doctors, 23 masters and 2 bachelors, in order to teach about 1,000 full-time and part-time students.
Furthermore, the facilities were modernly equipped in sync to assist the teaching and learning activities. There are 12 practical and experimental workshops with advanced and professional equipment.
The missions of the faculty are training, scientific researching to provide the technical teachers, engineers for universities, colleges, vocational schools, companies, incorporations in clothing and fashion industry, restaurant and hotels in Vietnam. The faculty concerns on consulting for businesses, incorporating to train and caring out the small contract for required organizations.With about 150 graduated students annually, they are warmly welcomed by employers, and have themselves searched the appropriate works.
