Our faculty was found in 1962, known as Department of Home Economics, Nguyen Truong To College of Technical Education, which affiliated with Phu Tho University of Technology, Republic of Vietnam. In 1974, the college was upgraded into Thu Duc University of Education. After the Reunification Day of Vietnam, it was again renamed into Thu Duc University of Technical Education on October 27, 1976. In 1984, it was merged with Thu Duc Vocational School of Industry in order to establish Ho Chi Minh University of Education and Technology (HCMUTE).

On September 4, 1985, the Minister of University agreed with upgrading the department of into the faculty to meet the demand of society at that time. Here is the first faculty having the undergraduate program of Home Economics in Vietnam. There were 6 lecturers, who have been trained abroad as well as inland before.

Due to the basic requirement of qualified engineers in apparel production industry, the bachelor program of garment technology was opened in 1992 and it was also unique program in Vietnam. After that, the apparel industry was strongly extended across the developing countries like Vietnam. Besides assembling the garments, the clothing creators were also required to compete against other countries in the world. The bachelor program of fashion design was thus opened in 2001.

Also, the faculty focused on wearing and eating of people - two of most essential demands. The bachelors in home economics need to be eligible to work in the food processing companies, supermarkets and hotels. Accordingly, the bachelor program in food processing was opened in 2004.
